Lullabies are a universal occurrence, independently originating in almost every known culture throughout history.
They are likely humanity’s earliest music. Prehistoric parents evolved soothing songs as a way to calm infants – enhancing survival by quieting babies and hiding them from predators.
Infant-directed songs are a plausible root of music itself, born from the dynamics of parent–child bonding in early humans.
